Alan Beith MP backs national campaign for warm homes

December 19, 2007 1:15 PM

Alan Beith MP is backing a national campaign that aims to highlight the plight of households who are concerned about being able to heat their homes to adequate levels this winter.

The Warm Homes campaign is the annual winter campaign organised by fuel poverty charity National Energy Action (NEA). The campaign aims to cut the number of excess winter deaths and reduce cold-related illnesses by raising awareness of the help available to people who cannot afford to heat their homes in winter.

Alan Beith, Lib Dem MP for Berwick-upon-Tweed, said:

"I am particularly pleased to the supporting the Warm Homes Campaign. Fuel poverty is a serious issue. It is vital that we help people to make their homes more energy efficient, to reduce people's bills and carbon emissions. No-one should have to spend the winter without affordable heat for their home. I want to see an end to fuel poverty in the Berwick-upon-Tweed constituency and across the UK."

Approximately one in six households are unable to heat their home. Cold homes affect people's health and wellbeing, and are linked to cardiovascular illnesses such as heart disease and stroke, and respiratory illnesses such as asthma and bronchitis. The elderly, families with young children, people with disabilities and those on low incomes are especially at risk.

Anyone who is worried about their winter fuel bill should call the Home Heat Helpline on 0800 336699 for information and advice on keeping warm in winter. For more information about grants available to keep your home warm, call for free on 0800 316 6014.

If you are a resident of the Berwick-upon-Tweed constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
