Figures published by the National Housing Federation show that homes in the Berwick-upon-Tweed constituency are among the most expensive in the north east, in relation to average earnings.
The Home Truths report reveals that the house price affordability ratio puts Berwick, Alnwick and Castle Morpeth in the top ten least affordable areas in the north east. In Berwick Borough, the average home in Berwick Borough costs 13.5 times the average earnings. Alnwick homes average at 11.3 times the average wage, and Castle Morpeth is close behind at 11.2 times the average wage.
Alan Beith said:
"These dramatic figures confirm how far house ownership is now out of reach of people on local wages. We need more affordable rented housing - the government should be helping local authorities to provide this, not telling them to restrict house building."
