Beith calls on British Library to look again at return of Lindisfarne Gospels to North East

January 15, 2008 11:30 AM

Berwick's Lib Dem MP Alan Beith, whose constituency includes the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, has been supported by other MPs in calls for the British Library to look again at returning the Lindisfarne Gospels to the North East.

Mr Beith has sponsored an Early Day motion in the House of Commons following press reports about the British Library withholding information and putting forward "spurious arguments for not allowing the Gospels to be returned to the North East".

Mr Beith said

"I am disappointed that a respected institution like the British Library has been obstructive and has withheld information which could strengthen the case for the Gospels to be returned. I hope the British Library will look again at the calls which have been made for the return of the Lindisfarne Gospels to the North East and will give this matter its serious attention."

If you are a resident of the Berwick-upon-Tweed constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
