Beith welcomes funding prospects for Alnwick schools partnership

January 29, 2008 4:00 PM

Berwick's Lib Dem MP Alan Beith has given a cautious welcome to reports that Northumberland County Council has allocated £33m for new school buildings in Alnwick.

Mr Beith said

"Alnwick desperately needs a new school to replace the Duchess Community High School, and the commitment of £33m from Northumberland County Council is vital.

"I hope that when the proposal goes to the full council next month that it will be approved.

"I have been keeping up pressure on the Minister for Schools, Jim Knight MP, to fulfil his promise to visit the Duchess School made when I secured a debate on schools funding in Northumberland in the House of Commons. I have asked him to ensure that the proposals to get our new school receive full national backing.

"Headteacher Maurice Hall, the staff and the students are continuing to produce very good results in difficult circumstances and we must make sure that new school buildings will help them deliver the high quality education our community deserves."
