Lib Dem Leader Clegg coming to hear from the north east

March 5, 2008 9:00 AM

Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Nick Clegg, has tabled a visit to the North East for 20th March and is asking as many people as possible to attend an open town-hall style question and answer session.

Nick Clegg MP will be launching his Party's regional local election campaigns in Newcastle, where the Lib Dems control the City Council, in the morning and meeting with local MPs, MEPs and activists. The Lib Dem Leader is launching the campaigns of the local elections in Newcastle and the elections to new unitary authorities in both Durham and Northumberland.

Nick is then in Morpeth Town Hall, Northumberland, from 17.00 to 18.00 to speak and answer the questions of local residents and find out what matters to people in the North East. The Liberal Democrats stand a real chance of beating Labour in the Unitary Elections in Northumberland. They have the momentum that could see them winning control of the new and unpopular Unitary Council which Labour has forced upon local communities despite a local referendum on the issue.

The region's high-profile MEP, Fiona Hall is joining Rt Hon Alan Beith MP, and many parliamentary candidates and local councillors in welcoming Nick to the region.

Commenting on the upcoming day, Fiona Hall said:

"Nick is really putting the North East on the map and showing he cares about the same issues we do, such as improving regional transport links.

"The Lib Dems are the force to contend with in the North East; the Tories are nowhere and Labour has been in retreat for years. It is a testament to the hard work of local Lib Dem councils such as Durham and Newcastle that Nick is coming to launch our campaign and increase the profile of the region as a forward-thinking Lib Dem hot-spot."

Alan Beith, Liberal Democrat MP for Berwick, emphasised the opportunity the event gave local people to have their say.

"Nick is hosting a series of these question and answer-style meetings up and down the country and I'm delighted that he is coming to the North East. It really does give local people the chance to quiz a major player in UK politics on the issues that matter to them. The Liberal Democrats have a well-deserved reputation for listening to local people.

"I very much look forward to what will be a high-profile launch to very successful Lib Dem campaigns!"
