Alan Beith MP has asked for more information about the response times for ambulances, following a report that shows ambulances in the Northumberland Care Trust area are not meeting the target of reaching 75% of Category A life-threatening calls within 8 minutes.
Alan Beith said
"I am concerned that the figures for the Northumberland Care Trust area are below the target for the area as a whole. This may reflect the fact that ambulance provision in rural areas is severely stretched. Although the paramedic services in Wooler and Rothbury are very valuable, there is still a gap in emergency ambulance provision which needs tackling with additional resources.
"I am asking the North East Ambulance Service for a further breakdown of the calls which were not met within 8 minutes and will continue to work for more resources for this vital service."
In a letter from the North East Ambulance Service, the percentage of Category A life threatening calls being reached within 8 minutes is given as 64.9% in 2005/06, 66.3% in 2006/07 and 69.6% in 2007/08. The NEAS aims to reach 75% of Category A life-threatening calls within 8 minutes. This should be set against a Northumberland-wide increase of 18% in the number of incidents being classed as category A life-threatening calls.
