Berwick's Liberal Democrat MP Sir Alan Beith has backed the Milfield campaign to save the local Post Office.
Following a packed meeting in the village last night, Sir Alan Beith said:
"The strength of feeling in the Milfield community is obvious and my staff and I will do everything we can to work with the community and help secure the future of the Post Office for the village.
"The Post Office network change plans have not fully taken into account the needs of the village and the difficulties of getting to other post offices, and also the problem of relying on public transport services which could change or be withdrawn in the future."
Sir Alan Beith was represented at the meeting by his senior researcher, Dr Clare Mills, who is also a councillor on Alnwick District Council. Dr Mills said:
"Seeing 75 people turning out in a small community like Milfield and hearing their stories about their reliance on the local Post Office was very moving and we will do all we can to help the campaign. The local people hold Brenda Brodie, the postmistress, in very high regard and they are determined to keep the services she provides them."
