The Liberal Democrats in Northumberland have welcomed the formation of a cross party campaign organisation, the A1 Action group.
Speaking after a meeting held in Berwick Cllr Dougie Watkin, Deputy Executive member for Highways, said
"We have argued relentlessly that the A1 should be dualled along its full length between Newcastle and Edinburgh and I hope this cross party group will show that the A1 issue concerns all parties. The Conservatives broken promise to dual the A1 from Newcastle to Edinburgh in 1992 and Labour's downgrading of the route in 2005 can hopefully be replaced by a genuine cross party effort towards this essential work."
Sir Alan Beith, Liberal Democrat MP for Berwick upon Tweed said
"Dualling of the A1 is needed on both economic and safety grounds and I welcome cross-party support for the campaign to get it finished.
"The dropping of the scheme, which the Highways Agency had prepared for the dangerous Adderstone section was a disgrace and we now have massive support to get the dualling on to the priority list."
At a meeting held in Berwick's Guildhall on Thursday evening, Sir Alan Beith MP was represented by Alnwick District Councillor Dr Clare Mills; and Mike Moore MP for Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk attended on behalf of residents north of the border. County Councillors Dougie Watkin, who represents Norham and Islandshire, and Pat Scott, who speaks for the Bamburgh division, were joined by Alan Thompson, Northumberland County Council's executive member for Highways. Representing the Berwick Borough Council were Leader of the Council Cllr Isabel Hunter, Cllr David Wilson, Deputy Leader, and Cllr Forbes Grant. Cllr David Raw from the Scottish Borders Council was also present.
