Biddlestone Chapel near Netherton has been restored with the support of the Historic Chapels Trust which is chaired by Alan Beith.
Sir Alan Beith MP, who is Chairman of the Historic Chapels Trust, welcomed a full house of 60 people to the re-launching of Biddlestone Chapel, near Netherton, Northumberland, following its recent repair and upgrading and the publication of a new comprehensive History and Guide written by well known author, John Martin Robinson. Biddlestone benefited from a range of grants including funds from English Heritage, the Heritage Lottery Fund, Aggregates Sustainability Fund, Northern Rock Foundation and from Biddlestone Friends Group.
Biddlestone Chapel (II*) was once the private chapel to Biddlestone Hall (demolished in the 1950's) and is now owned by the Historic Chapels Trust. It is built over the remains of a mediaeval pele tower that forms the chapel's undercroft. The tower had a garrison of 20 men in 1509. It houses a World War II Anderson shelter. The whole structure is a Scheduled Ancient monument within Northumberland National Park.
The Historic Chapels Trust was established in 1993 to take into ownership non-Anglican chapels and churches that are no longer required for regular worship but which are of outstanding architectural quality and historic interest.
HCT also owns Coanwood Friends Meeting House (II*) near Haltwhistle, that dates from 1760.
Biddlestone Friends organise various events in the chapel as well as visitor parties. Information from Tony Henfrey on 01665 574420.
The guide costs £8 from the chapel, £10 from HCT.
