Nick Clegg, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, met Tul Bahadur Pun, a former Gurkha and VC holder, as part of the campaign to get better
Berwick's Liberal Democrat MP Sir Alan Beith has continued to press for all Gurkha soldiers to have the legal right to remain in the UK, not just those who have left the Army since 1997.
"The Gurkhas are widely recognised as professional, committed and loyal soldiers and I am continuing to urge the Government to give all those Gurkhas who have served our country the right to remain here once they have left the Army, just like soldiers from the Commonwealth.
"Gurkhas who retired before 1997 should not be discriminated against based on an arbitrary date and be forced to apply to stay in the UK which may result in refusal and possible deportation. This is no way to treat brave soldiers who were willing to sacrifice their lives for our country, by fighting across the world in our interests. The current immigration rules are an insult to them.
"Hopefully, given the recent High Court ruling on 30th September 2008, that declared the current treatment of Gurkhas who retired before 1997 as unlawful in terms of the right to live in the UK, the Government will be spurred to support our proposals for a change to the immigration rules regarding Gurkhas."
Alan Beith has signed an Early Day Motion calling on the Government to give all Gurkhas the legal right to remain in the UK after the end of their service with the Army. Until the Government change the current immigration rules, Alan Beith, Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats will continue to campaign on behalf of the Gurkhas so that they receive the treatment and respect they deserve.
