Beith meets Prime Minister over North East economy

February 25, 2009 11:30 AM
Gordon Brown

Alan Beith will remind the Prime Minister to "Think North East" later today.

Sir Alan Beith, Liberal Democrat MP for Berwick upon Tweed, will meet the Prime Minister later today to discuss the economy of the north east, after raising this issue two weeks' ago at Prime Minister's Questions.

Sir Alan Beith said

"We are seeing unemployment rising and there is a very real need for support for businesses and investment in construction projects, which the Government could provide. I will be asking the Prime Minister to look carefully at Government spending plans to ensure that the north east gets its fair share of support. The north east and other regions with traditional manufacturing economies are being disproportionately affected by the recession and I want to make sure the Prime Minister is aware of this.

"I will also take the opportunity to remind the Prime Minister about the petition handed in by students from the Duchess Community High School in Alnwick two weeks ago on the terrible state of the school's buildings. I hope the Prime Minister might remind the Schools Minister of his promise to visit the school and see for himself how bad conditions are for students and staff, who work to achieve very impressive results in such a run down environment."

If you are a resident of the Berwick-upon-Tweed constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
