Sir Alan Beith, Liberal Democrat MP for the Berwick upon Tweed constituency, attended the National Federation of Newsagents' reception at the House of Commons on Monday, where he met with representatives of North East retailers to hear first hand about the concerns and the key issues affecting independent newsagents and convenience store retailers.
Called "The Heart of your Community is under Threat", the reception enabled small independent retailers to raise their concerns about business crime, the sustainability of communities, self-regulation in the newspaper and magazine market and the proposed tobacco display ban.
Alan Beith said
"Newsagents are vital businesses in small communities and in a credit crunch I do not want to see them hampered by new laws which have no prospect of achieving anything."
The National Federation of Retail Newsagents represents 30,0000 independent newsagents and convenience store operators in the UK and Republic of Ireland. It exists to help them compete more effectively in today's highly challenging marketplace.
