The continuing shortage of NHS dentists was raised by Sir Alan Beith MP at a meeting with Northumberland Primary Care Trust Chief Executive Chris Reed.
"People should not be left with no option but to go to a private dentist when there is supposed to be an NHS dentistry service" said Sir Alan.
He was told of the Trust's plans to tackle the shortage by putting dental services at Tweedmouth clinic out to tender and, if successful, to consider taking similar steps in other parts of Northumberland.
Sir Alan also raised the need for pulmonary rehabilitation services and kidney dialysis services to be available in North Northumberland, and for more facilities to be available to deal with alcoholism.
Sir Alan said,
"Although we have many excellent services in the NHS locally, which constituents regularly praise, there are also some serious gaps which involve patients travelling huge distances for regular treatment, or waiting for too long for treatment which would help them and save the NHS from the costs of their condition getting worse."
