Commenting on Government proposals to offer subsidies to encourage people to buy electric cars, Liberal Democrat Member of the European Parliament for the North East and energy-specialist Fiona Hall said:
"Electric vehicles have an important role to play in reducing carbon emissions. But the Government's decision to announce financial help to help encourage people to buy electric is positively dangerous.
"People thinking about buying an electric car may now shelve their plans because they know that in two years' time they will get a leg up from the Government. The Government is in real danger of freezing the electric vehicle industry in the middle of a recession, when really it should be doing all it can to make sure this industry stays afloat and this is particularly risky for the North East which has a thriving electric vehicle industry."
