"The A1 is dangerous enough, without the Highways Agency removing signs that are helpful to motorists," says Alan Beith.
Berwick MP Sir Alan Beith has attacked the Highways Agency for its action in removing direction signs to the Golf Club at Goswick from the A1 south of Berwick.
In a letter to Alan Beith, the Agency has apologised for removing the signs without notifying the Club, but says they were removed because they had "exceeded the normal ten year life". The Agency goes on to say that the signs cannot be replaced because, in line with the Agency's current policy, they were "deemed unnecessary".
Alan Beith comments
"It is bad enough that the Highways Agency refuses permission for new signs to important tourist destinations but to remove signs on the grounds that they are ten years old, when the road system has very much older signs, and then refuse to allow them to be replaced, is a shabby trick.
"The Goswick turning is at a dangerous point on a single carriageway, with fast traffic, and with increasing numbers of visitors to the course turning right across the carriageway. The last thing we want is a lack of signs leaving motorists uncertain about their route."
