Mail columnist wants Beith for Speaker

June 17, 2009 10:15 AM

Regular Daily Mail columnist Andrew Alexander believes Alan Beith should be the next Speaker of the House of Commons.

In today's Daily Mail, Mr Alexander writes:

"The Commons will elect a new Speaker next week. When Tory backbencher John Bercow first emerged as a favourite because of the backing of so many Labour MPs, I refused to believe it. Even if he is elected, I shall refuse to believe it.

"Even if I see him sitting in the Chair adorned with a wig and all the grand robes of office, I shall still refuse to believe it. It will be some sort of joke, perhaps an optical illusion.

"The reason given why many Labour MPs back him is that it will annoy the Tories. The idea of choosing a Speaker out of party spite is something of a novelty. MPs may be bent, idle and selfish, but surely not completely daft?

"All MPs, including Labour, say the current political crisis demonstrates that the public has lost confidence in Parliament.

"If so, choosing a Speaker in this way suggests no serious interest in change.

"Perhaps common sense will prevail - it sometimes does, you know. Lib Dem Alan Beith is a good candidate and should get the job. "

If you are a resident of the Berwick-upon-Tweed constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
