Sir Alan Beith MP has acted swiftly to ensure that people affected by swine flu in the Berwick-upon-Tweed constituency can get hold of antiviral medication on prescription.
After finding out that the nearest collection points were in Blyth or Byker, THE Liberal Democrat MP immediately contacted NHS North of Tyne to push for easier access to the drugs. Sir Alan said
"People cannot reasonably be expected to travel up to 120 miles to get Tamiflu and I am very pleased that the health trust has recognised this and organised a delivery service, which is being provided through the Red Cross.
"I have also been told that a distribution centre is to be set up in Berwick, hopefully early next week, which will make it easier for people to collect drugs if these have been prescribed.
"At the moment plans for a centre in Alnwick have been considered but there are not enough cases to justify moving staff from other duties to operate a distribution point. However I am satisfied that officials are keeping a very close eye on the situation and that a centre may well be opened if the pattern of outbreaks alters significantly."
