Beith highlights issue of emergency access through Berwick's Ness Gate

October 1, 2009 9:00 AM

Sir Alan Beith MP has taken up the problem of emergency vehicles needing access through the Ness Gate with both the North East Ambulance Service and Northumberland Fire and Rescue Services. According to local residents, fire engines and ambulances are unable to go through the Ness Gate, leaving people in Pier Road, Devon Terrace and the old coastguard station vulnerable.

Sir Alan said

"I have asked the services whether this is the case and, if so, what plans they have in place to ensure that their vehicles can reach these streets if an emergency occurs.

"I know there have been talks about engineering work for the gate but that there are also archaeological considerations. But I want to ensure that people living in that part of town are not cut off from the emergency services.

"This needs urgent answers and I will keep up the pressure until I am satisfied people are safe."

If you are a resident of the Berwick-upon-Tweed constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
