Flooding issues once again topped the list of questions raised with Sir Alan Beith MP during his surgery tour of 122 villages in his constituency, which he completed last week.
"Many people who had suffered from the devastating floods last September had been alarmed by the further flooding in July, from which many properties only narrowly escaped. I have continued to work with the Environment Agency and other bodies to bring forward urgent short-term measures and to prepare plans for more extensive flood protection work as soon as possible," said Sir Alan.
Other issues which were raised included road and footpath maintenance needs, road safety and traffic speed through the villages. Problems affecting small businesses in the countryside and agriculture were regularly raised as well as issues about the administration of pensions, benefits and the Child Support Agency. Objections to both wind farms and nuclear power were brought up by a number of people and several came for advice on planning problems or health service matters.
A total of 150 people came to see Sir Alan during his 900 mile tour of the rural; areas of the constituency which took place over nine days.
Sir Alan added
"The surgery tour generates a lot of work but I really value the opportunity to meet so many people in their own villages and hamlets, especially those who do not come to my regular surgeries held throughout the year in Berwick, Alnwick and other towns."
If you missed Sir Alan on his tour the next surgeries are at the Constituency Office in Alnwick on Friday 23 October between 2.00 and 3.00pm; Trinity Methodist Church Hall in Amble on Saturday 31 October between 10.30 and 11.30am; and Berwick on Friday 6 November (details to be confirmed). Please call the Constituency Office on 01665 602901 for more information.
