"The courage shown on D-Day is an example to us all," says Sir Alan Beith MP.
Sir Alan Beith MP is to present a Berwick D-Day veteran with the Normandy Bar.
Mr Longbone of Osbourne Road, Tweedmouth, was one of nearly 30,000 British troops who took part in the Normandy landings on Sword Beach on 6 June 1944.
Now his part in the landings has been recognised by the Normandy Council which is awarding Normandy Bar medals - inscribed 1944-2009 Normandy, Terre de Liberte - to survivors of the seaborn invasions which paved the way for the liberation of Europe. The Normandy Council distributed the medals to veterans who returned to France for a ceremony at Arramanche to commemorate 65 years since the landings, but Mr Longbone was not able to make the journey and so arrangements have been made for him to receive his medal in Berwick.
Sir Alan said
"The courage of those who took part in the D-Day landings will never be forgotten and their actions in June 1944 were vital to the liberation of France and the defeat of the Nazis. I am honoured to have been asked to give Mr Longbone his medal on behalf of the Normandy Council."
Mr Longbone will receive his medal from Sir Alan at the War Memorial in Berwick at 3pm on Friday 6 November. In the event of inclement weather the award will take place at the Citizens Advice Bureau in Tweed Street.
