Sir Alan and students from the north east spent a day at Auschwitz learning about the genocide of World War II.
Berwick's Liberal Democrat MP Sir Alan Beith has accompanied students from north east schools on a day trip to Auschwitz organised by the Holocaust Education Trust.
Students from the Duchess Community High School in Alnwick, Coquet High School in Amble and King Edward VI School in Morpeth were among those who travelled to Poland on Thursday 5 November.
Sir Alan said
"The trip was an overpowering experience and I believe it is very important that younger generations should understand what happened, and how vital it is, after recent experiences in Rwanda and Darfur, that we continue to fight against genocide."
During the trip Sir Alan and the students saw displays of belongings taken from victims as well as human hair which had been collected by guards from the prisoners, and attending briefing sessions to prepare them for their walk around the camp.
The Holocaust Educational Trust was established in 1988. Its aim is to educate young people from every background about the Holocaust and the important lessons to be learned for today. The Trust works in schools, universities and in the community to raise awareness and understanding of the Holocaust, providing teacher training, an outreach programme for schools, teaching aids and resource material. One of its earliest achievements was ensuring that the Holocaust formed part of the National Curriculum for History. It continues to play a leading role in training teachers on how best to teach the Holocaust.
