Sir Alan Beith has condemned the Government for the contents of the Queen's Speech given today at the State Opening of Parliament.
The Lib Dem MP for Berwick upon Tweed said
"This was not a real Queen's Speech - Labour gave the Queen the job of reading out their election leaflet, not a serious programme of bills which they intend to get through.
"If Ministers want to start an election campaign rather than looking after the needs of the country, they should go ahead and have the election now."
The speech referenced 11 new Bills which included the introduction of a Health Bill to guarantee cancer patients will receive a consultation within two weeks and a Policing, Crime and Security Bill to give people a greater say over policing and crime prevention policies.
however the cancer guarantee could be implemented tomorrow without the need for legislation and the Health Bill is no substitute for practical action. As most NHS trusts in England already meet the two-week deadline, it is vital that the Government invests more money in cancer treatment centres such as the chemotherapy service now available at Berwick Infirmary.
