Sir Alan Beith MP has asked the Government to look into the provision of apprenticeships for blacksmiths and heritage crafts.
Sir Alan had been contacted by constituents following the Labour Government's announcement that the apprenticeship for blacksmiths, known as the New Entrants Training Scheme (NETS), is to be discontinued. There are fears that ending this route into blacksmithing could undermine the future of this highly skilled trade.
Sir Alan raised this issue in Parliament with the Minister for Universities and Science, who gave an assurance that the Government is "committed to improving the apprenticeship regime for craft skills."
Following the debate, Sir Alan said
"The Minister made a positive commitment to craft apprenticeships but it is also important to make sure training courses are available, and I will continue to pursue this issue with the Ministers."
