The case for special funding for new school buildings in Alnwick was made again in Parliament this week when Sir Alan Beith MP raised the case of the urgent need for replacement buildings for the Duchess's Community High School with the Secretary of State.
Speaking in Parliament, Sir Alan said:
"Is the Secretary of State aware that Building Schools for the Future did not provide properly for schools that perform well but have buildings in a disgraceful state, such as the Duchess's community high school in Alnwick, and can he offer any hope to schools in that position, whose record of good results impairs their ability to get buildings they desperately need?"
The Secretary of State replied:
"There are funds available to repair schools such as the Duchess's high school in Alnwick.
"I will look sympathetically on the case my right hon. Friend makes, and I hope that I or one of my ministerial colleagues will have a chance to visit Alnwick soon to see for ourselves how the school is coping."
Following the debate, Sir Alan said
"I am very pleased that the Secretary of State has made such positive comments about the need for action on the Duchess's Community High School in Alnwick and confirmed that he or the Schools Minister will visit the school again soon. I will continue to press the Ministers on this urgent issue because although finances are difficult at present this school is a priority that the previous government failed to deal with."
Sir Alan has been campaigning for funding for new school buildings in Alnwick and recently the County Council was given permission to make an exceptional case for funding to the Partnership for Schools. Although the bid was not approved in March 2010, officials promised that the situation would be reviewed after the General Election. Sir Alan Beith will continue working for the funds Alnwick needs.
