Sir Alan Beith has welcomed clarification from DEFRA on the requirements for recording the movement of sheep on between holdings on a farm when the movement is less than five miles.
Sir Alan questioned the Minister on the extra burden of administration which was being put on farmers having to record the movement of every sheep, evern between holdings which form part of one farm. Previously movements did not have to be recorded if they were between holdings less than five miles apart.
Now Sir Alan has received a letter from the Minister which states that transitional arrangements have been agreed which will permit farmers to record movements in batches, rather than for individual sheep. In addition, farmers moving sheep between holdings which are less than five miles apart, and which are parts of the same farm, will not have to submit a record.
Sir Alan said
"Farmers are under an ever-increasing burden of administration and the introduction of the electronic ID of sheep has created many problems, not least with the expensive equipment required being unreliable when used in wet conditions. At least the Minister has agreed that there can be some exemptions to recording movements which will be a help to farmers."
