Beith's campaign off to flying start!

April 12, 2010 12:00 AM

Liberal Democrats in the Berwick upon Tweed constituency have launched their campaign to re-elect Sir Alan Beith following the official announcement that the General Election will be held on 6 May 2010.

Local Chairman John Hobrough said

"Labour have let the country down over the economy and under them the gap between the richest and poorest in our society has got wider and wider. The Conservatives' promises on the Health Service, National Insurance and spending simply don't add up. The Liberal Democrats are the only party to offer real change for the country with plans to put fairness back at the heart of the tax system, taking the lowest earners and poorest pensioners out of income tax altogether and saving ordinary people £700 per year.

"In Sir Alan Beith we have a local champion with a proven track record of speaking out for the Berwick constituency, who puts our area first. It seems as if everyone knows someone who's been helped by Alan Beith. We're working hard to make sure he is re-elected."

Sir Alan Beith added

"I have fought hard for local people for many years and want to carry on using my national experience and local knowledge to get the best deal for local people. I've had some big successes, like saving RAF Boulmer from closure and making sure we have excellent health services, as well as

getting improvements to parts of the A1. But but there's still a lot more I want to do. The fight here is between me and the Conservative - Labour have never come close to winning here."

All supporters are invited to attend one of the Adoption Meetings for Sir Alan on Friday 9 April 2010 between 6-7pm at St James's Church Centre, Pottergate Alnwick or between 8-9pm at the William Elder Building in Berwick. Old friends and new are welcome - please come along.

Sir Alan will be taking part in two hustings in Alnwick and one in Berwick. In Alnwick there will be an environmentally-themed Question Time, organised by Alnwick Area Friends of the Earth, from 7pm on Thursday 15 April at St James's Church Centre, Pottergate. Alnwick Churches Together have also organised a general hustings for Thursday 22 April at St Michael's Church Hall.
