School buildings are top priority, says Beith

May 18, 2010 12:00 AM

Sir Alan Beith, Liberal Democrat MP for Berwick upon Tweed, has already written to the Schools Minister pressing for a review of the case for exceptional funding for new school buildings in Alnwick.

Sir Alan said

"In the past year both the Schools Minister and the then Shadow Schools Minister visited the school. I am asking the newly appointed Schools Minister to take a personal interest in this situation and do all they can to ensure that we can get the funding for a new school.

"I hope to have face-to-face talks with the Minister soon and will be emphasising how urgent this situation is.

"The students and staff do an excellent job in very difficult circumstances and I will keep working to get a school fit for the 21st century for them."

The new Schools Minister is Nick Gibb who visited the Duchess Community High School in Alnwick earlier this year and so has seen for himself the problems the school faces because of the state of the buildings and the split site of the school.

If you are a resident of the Berwick-upon-Tweed constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
