After several days of negotiation with both the Conservatives and Labour, the Liberal Democrats have reached an agreement with the Conservatives to form a Coalition Government.
On Sunday members of the Liberal Democrats from the Berwick upon Tweed constituency travelled to Birmingham for the party's Special Conference on the coalition. Sir Alan Beith MP and his wife Diana, who sits in the House of Lords as Baroness Maddock, along with Fiona Hall MEP who lives in Whittingham, also attended. Around 2000 delegates voted overwhelmingly in support of the agreement that had been reached.
Sir Alan Beith MP has welcomed the stability the coalition will provide for the country in the difficult times ahead, saying
"The enthusiasm of party members reflected the fact that so many Liberal Democrat commitments, such as helping the low paid, political reform and the environment were firmly incorporated in the coalition agreement.
"These are not going to be easy times because of the financial crisis the new government has inherited, but in the national interest we had to work with others while continuing to make our distinctive Liberal Democrat contribution to politics."
Local Liberal Democrat Angelika Schneider from Longhorsley was one of those who travelled to Birmingham to take part in the conference. She said
"I am proud that we have been able to handle this political situation in a grown-up manner and that we have been able to put our personal likes and dislikes to one side to enable the parties to work together for the good of the country."
