Speaking in the House of Commons, Sir Alan Beith, Liberal Democrat MP for Berwick upon Tweed, questioned Transport Secretary Philip Hammond as to whether he would treat the A1 as a "national strategic road, rather than a regional road, and develop plans for full duelling of it when resources allow". The Minister assured Sir Alan that this would be the case.
Under the previous Labour Government the A1 was classified as a 'regional road' which meant that the much needed funding required for duelling could not be raised from national spending budget.
The promise from the Transport Secretary came with the warning that transport projects as a whole would be constrained until the "black hole" of the nation's finances was sorted out.
Speaking later in the day, Sir Alan said:
"It is clearly right that the A1 should be treated as a national strategic road and I have been pressing that. The Labour Government refused to do this. The trouble is there is very little money in the national pot. At least the Minister has agreed we should be planning a complete duelling when the resources are available."
