Encouraging younger people vital as population ages - Beith

Age Map 2031

The Age Map, published by the Department of Work and Pensions, predicts a high proportion of older people in the Berwick upon Tweed constituency in 2031.

Figures issued by the Department of Work and Pensions show that the Berwick upon Tweed constituency is facing a significant increase in the number of older people over the next twenty years.

The Age Map shows an increase around Alnwick from 22% to 34%, and around Berwick from 26% to 40%, one of the largest rises in the country.

Commenting, Sir Alan said

"Here in the Berwick upon Tweed constituency we already have a significant proportion of older people and this forecast shows a marked increase over the coming years. As well as having implications for health and other services, we need to find more ways to encourage younger people to stay here or move to our area.

"As well as the proposals for university education in Berwick, we need to look at more ways to bring younger people into farming and the development of other employment in areas such as tourism, IT and the green economy."

If you are a resident of the Berwick-upon-Tweed constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
