Following representations from concerned residents near Lindisfarne Middle School in Alnwick, Sir Alan Beith MP has asked the Secretary of State for education to clarify the requirements for schools to fence their property.
Sir Alan Beith MP said
"I have been approached by residents and at their request I have asked the Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove, to look into the Ofsted guidance on fencing around school buildings and fields. I hope to get clarification on the issue as it has obviously created tension between the school and neighbouring residents."
A 1.8m high green wire fence has been erected around the perimeter of Lindisfarne Middle School's field, closing off access to the field and preventing residents from carrying out maintenance to hedges, shrubs and fences without first needing to make arrangements with the school. Reports in the local press suggest that the fence, with an estimated cost of £27,000, has been installed as part of the school's safeguarding measures and to comply with Ofsted guidance. However the Duke's Middle School has recently passed its Ofsted inspection with no requirement to put a fence around its school field.
