Beith courts justice for Alnwick from Minister

August 12, 2010 12:00 AM

The fight to save Alnwick Magistrate' Court is continuing. Sir Alan Beith MP has had several discussions with Kenneth Clarke MP, the Secretary of State for Justice, over the Justice Department's plans to close the Magistrates Court in Alnwick and move cases to Bedlington and, for a few, Berwick.

Sir Alan is also backing the campaign run by the Northumberland Gazette to help keep the Magistrates' Court in the town.

Sir Alan Beith MP says

"I welcome the attention the Northumberland Gazette is giving to the Court. Closing the Court will certainly create difficulties for getting witnesses to court if cases are transferred to Bedlington and there is no prospect of money being saved by selling the court building which is shared with the Police Station."

To back up his formal submission to the Department of Justice on the future of the Court, Sir Alan has written to local solicitors asking for their views and an assessment of the impact that the Court's closure would have on their clients.

If you are a resident of the Berwick-upon-Tweed constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
