Budget expected to help thousands of low-paid workers in Northumberland – Beith

March 21, 2012 10:43 AM

Budget boxToday's Budget is expected to take thousands more low-paid workers out of income tax, thanks to the Liberal Democrat policy of raising the income tax threshold.

The Chancellor is expected to announce the delivery of a key Liberal Democrat manifesto promise - to take the lowest paid out of income tax altogether. Last year nearly 6000 people in Northumberland stopped paying income tax and this year another 7,400 people will stop paying income tax on their low earnings. Another 129,200 people across Northumberland on low and middle incomes will see their take home pay rise by at least £130.

Local MP Sir Alan Beith said

"I am delighted at the Liberal Democrat achievement in securing help for people on low and middle income, and this will be of particular benefit in a low-wage area like Northumberland.

"We are working towards a key Liberal Democrat policy of significantly raising the income tax threshold which is making a difference to ordinary people across the country."

If you are a resident of the Berwick-upon-Tweed constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
